Statecraft in Winter

A poem mourning false American hopes

Though silenced still, I hear a trill
A once-feared eagle’s wings unfurl

A frost-capped dome take shape anew
Flags don’t fear red touching blue

Winter’s wrath brings walls to scale
So swift, so quick, all empathies fail

Lawmaker’s house, storm sons and scepters
Eagle’s wings shame resurrectors

Turrets this day are tyrants’ feet
Pushing, shoving, white stars retreat

Hoarfrost’s scheming, ignorance compelled
Speech-lines undone, false hopes withheld

Though fire’s warmth its best has tried
Winter lingers after ideals die

Latin inscribing conjures Colosseum
Only God grants lasting freedom
